Spring Creek Outdoor Adventures

We are excited to introduce outdoor recreation opportunities for Mat-Su residents:  Spring Creek Outdoor Adventures!  We are a program of Alaska Pacific University's FIELD School.  We provide year-round recreation opportunities for individual youth, youth groups, schools, and families in the Mat-Su Valley.

Our programs are low-cost, and we host many free events throughout the year. We want as many people as possible to be able to participate in our programs!

These programs are made possible by a generous grant from the Mat-Su Health Foundation.

What kinds of activities do we offer?  Some seasonal activities include:  cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, bird watching, snow-sculpting, shelter building, hiking, and many more!  We have limited sets of snowshoes (for ages 3+) and skis with boots for the public to use during our winter programs.

How can you join the fun?  Click on the links to the right for more information on current and upcoming programs, as well as how to register and/or contact us.

We look forward to having lots of great outdoor adventures with you!

Louise's Farm School

"The Mission of Louise’s Farm School is to encourage each student’s discovery of the joy of learning through hands-on activities in nearby nature, in their home community and to nourish healthy lifestyles with local nutritious foods."

"This program includes three distinct sessions spanning the 2008-2010 school year...

Louise's Farm School was created with your family in mind: providing home schooled children with a community-centered social experience that meets multidisciplinary agendas, through environmental education (EE).  Yes, EE is more than science; it combines all elements of natural and cultural history.

Our goal is to create holistic learners that pursue interests and solve problems by looking through a wide-angle lens, utilizing scientific inquiry, historical understanding, cultural awareness and linguistic reflection."

FIELD School for youth, families, and adults

School visits & field trips

FIELD School offers a number of farm- and forest-based outdoor & environmental education programs to local and visiting schools.  Schools can  invite us into their classrooms or come out and visit us at the Farm.  All of our programs teach about local plants, animals and environments and meet Alaska State and Mat-Su Borough Grade Level Expectations.

Adult & Family Programs

FIELD School also offers programs and classes open to the community at large.  These are typically hosted at the farm and geared towards more adult audiences and family groups.  Created and facilitated by MSOEE (MS in Outdoor and Environmental Education) students and Farm staff, topics cover a broad range of subjects, from ecology and outdoor education to sustainable farming and gardening."

Children's Garden

Still in process, this community resource will be a place for your children to play and discover the soil food web in action!

We are in our second year of construction.  The space is over a half of an acre, giving us plenty of room for many different educational gardens, teaching spaces and natural play areas.  This first year, 2009, we tilled and seeded the plot with a nice grass and clover mix to replace the hay sod, put up the fence, and built the deck for our 30x30 Gazebo, which will serve as a great meeting and teaching space.  This year, we will plant all of our perennials - including a living fence that will surround the entire inside of the garden -, build a pond, and set up our various themed gardens.  From the pizza garden to the five senses garden, from rabbit land to the forest loop trail, this new space is sure to inspire!  Round it all out with a loaf of bread cooked in our wood fired cob oven, and our children's garden is sure to be a big hit for all ages.

This project is made possible by a generous grant from the Mat-Su Health Foundation.
